Obscene wealth: World’s 85 richest have same wealth as 3.5 billion poorest – Oxfam

RT 2014-01.20
The world’s 85 wealthiest people have as much money as the 3.5 billion poorest people on the planet – half the Earth’s population. That’s according to Oxfam’s latest report on the risks of the widening gap between the super-rich and the poor.

The report, titled “Working for the Few,” was released Monday, and was compiled by Oxfam – an international organization looking for solutions against poverty and injustice.

The document focuses on the extent of global economic inequality caused by rapidly increasing wealth of the richest people that poses the threat to the “human progress.”

A total of 210 people became billionaires last year, joining the existing 1,426 billionaires with a combined net worth of $5.4 trillion.

"Instead of moving forward together, people are increasingly separated by economic and political power, inevitably heightening social tensions and increasing the risk of societal breakdown," the report stated.

Also, according to the Oxfam data, the richest 1 percent of people across the globe have $110 trillion, or 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the planet’s population – which effectively “presents significant threat to inclusive political and economic systems.”

“- It is staggering that, in the 21st century, half of the world’s population — that’s three and a half billion people — own no more than a tiny elite whose numbers could all fit comfortably on a double-decker bus,” Oxfam chief executive Winnie Byanyima told a news conference.

And the number of the rich is steadily growing: for example, in India the number of billionaires skyrocketed from six to 61 in the past 10 years, and their combined net worth is currently $250 billion.

The report comes ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos which begins later this week, and urges the world leaders to discuss how to tackle this pressing issue.

Among the solutions presented by Oxfam are measures to avoid tax dodging and using economic wealth to pressure governments, looking for political benefits. Also, the organization calls for “making public all the investments in companies and trusts for which they are the ultimate beneficial owners,” as well as “challenging governments to use tax revenue to provide universal healthcare, education and social protection for citizens.”

Oxfam also said that there are many laws that favor the rich, which were lobbied for in a “power grab” by the world’s wealthiest people.

Since the late 1970s, tax rates for the richest have fallen in 29 out of 30 countries for which data are available, according to Oxfam.

"A survey in six countries (the US, UK, Spain, Brazil, India and South Africa) showed that a majority of people believe that laws are skewed in favor of the rich," the report said.

For instance, almost 80 percent of the Spanish and the Indians, as well as over 60 per cent of the US and the UK residents, either agree or strongly agree that “the rich have too much influence over where this country is headed.”

  1. --Top 1% Has 65 Times More Wealth Than The Bottom Half And The Global Elite Like It That Way--

    January 22, 2014

    Source: Michael Snyder

Did you know that the 85 richest people in the world have about as much wealth as the poorest 50% of the entire global population does? In other words, 85 extremely wealthy individuals have about as much wealth as the poorest 3,500,000,000 do.

This shocking statistic comes from a new report on global poverty by Oxfam. And actually Oxfam's report probably significantly underestimates the true scope of the problem, because Oxfam relies on publicly reported numbers.

At the very top of the food chain, the global elite are masters at hiding their wealth. In fact, as I have written about previously, the global elite have approximately 32 trillion dollars (that we know about) stashed in offshore banks around the world. That would be about enough to pay off the entire U.S. national debt and buy every good and service produced in the United States for an entire year.

These elitists live on an entirely different planet than the rest of us do. In fact, according to Oxfam, the richest one percent of the global population has 65 times more wealth than the bottom half of the global population combined.

There is certainly nothing wrong with making money. In fact, the founders of the United States intended for this nation to be a place where free markets thrived and where everyone could pursue their dreams. Unfortunately, this country (along with the rest of the world) has moved very much in the opposite direction.

Today, we have a debt-based global financial system which is dominated by gigantic predator corporations and big banks. Working together with national governments, these corporations and banks have constructed a system that I like to call "Corporatism" in which the percentage of all global wealth that is being funneled to the very top of the pyramid steadily grows over time.

The Founding Fathers were very correct to be very suspicious of large concentrations of power. In the early days of the United States, the federal government was very small and the size and scope of corporations was greatly limited. Our nation thrived and a huge middle class blossomed.

Sadly, over the past several decades the pendulum has completely swung in the other direction. Today, our society is completely and totally dominated by big banks, big corporations and big government. [...]

  2. --Record 20% of Households on Food Stamps in 2013--

A record 20% of American households, one in five, were on food stamps in 2013, according to datafrom the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The numbers also show there was a record number of individuals on food stamps in 2013 and that the cost of the program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), was at an all-time high.

The USDA says that there were 23,052,388 households on food stamps in the average month of fiscal 2013, an increase of 722,675 from fiscal year 2012, when there were 22,329,713 households on food stamps in the average month. [...]

  3. --World ‘great’ for billionaires at Davos, rampant inequality still threat--

    RT January 22, 2014

On the eve of the Davos forum Bill Gates, the world’s richest man, said that “the world is better than it has ever been before,” but experts at the forum in Switzerland suggest his view from the top may be a bit foggy.

The world’s rich and powerful have congregated in the picturesque Alpine resort of Davos to discuss issues most have never had to deal with up close and personally – severe poverty and inequality.

The Gates Foundation, the world’s largest and most generous charitable foundation released their annual open letter which sought to debunk myths of poverty and inequality and predicted that by 2035 “there will be almost no poor countries left in the world”.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) which hosts the event, warned last week that the biggest danger to the global economy over the next decade is wealth inequality, as it can give rise to social instability and rampant poverty.

"I think, when you have such a disparity between the wealth controlled by such a few number of individuals, or the gap that exists between that minority verses the majority, you really do have the potential for such significant unrest in different parts of the world, which is going to be one of the biggest challenges we are going to have to deal with," Dennis Nally, Chairman and Senior Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, told AP on the sidelines of the forum.

“The biggest danger is that this small group of people also capture political power,” Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director, Oxfam International United Kingdom said.

  5. --The obscene lifestyles of the new global super-rich--

    January 24, 2014

    Source: Orwell Was Right

Are some of the things the super-rich spend their money on wasteful indulgences and a sign of modern day decadence? Or is it none of our business what they spend their hard-earned (or fraudulently acquired) cash on? Salon takes a look at the lifestyles of some of the super-rich and asks what kind of psychological drives motivate them.

A new crop of global super-rich is pouring into the United States, changing the economic landscape from Manhattan to Los Angeles. They’re driving up the price of real estate, pushing out the middle class and going on buying binges that would make Gilded Age robber barons blush.

First they want the hotel room — perhaps the storied, $15,000-a-night penthouse at the Fairmont San Francisco, where guests receive honey made by the Fairmont’s own honeybees. JFK was rumored to tryst there with Marilyn Monroe. Next they want the shopping spree, snapping up million-dollar diamond Chanel watches and $1,000-per-ounce perfume. Then they want to buy a home in their favorite playground —maybe a $90 million pad at Manhattan’s behemoth One57, where they can pay negligible taxes yet enjoy the full menu of New York City services. 6. --The acceleration of a global Gilded Age--

    January 26, 2014

Source: My Budget 360, Guest Post

The acceleration of a global Gilded Age: Half of the world’s wealth now owned by one percent of the population. Bottom half of world population own the same as the richest 85 people in the world.

Wealth inequality across the globe has reached epic proportions. While many bankers roll around in piles of digital million dollar bonuses for basically adding no value to the economy, the rest of the world struggles to enter this modern economic era. The perception is that this is only happening across the world in other nations. Unfortunately the US has done an excellent job of exporting the middle class and creating a widening gap between rich and poor. A report by Oxfam International highlighted the dramatic wealth inequality that now plagues the world. Half of the world’s wealth is now owned by the top one percent of the population. Interestingly enough this pattern is also unfolding here in the United States. The global banking system has protected its own interests and to what end? It appears that a modern day global Gilded Age is now unfolding.[...]

  9. Two Dozen Generals and Admirals Investigated for Sexual Misconduct

    January 30, 2014

    Source: All Gov.
If it’s not being criticized for failing to crackdown on sexual assaults, the U.S. military is enduring embarrassing revelations about senior commanders accused of sexual misconduct.

The Washington Post reports numerous generals and admirals have been accused of inappropriate sexual behavior ranging from assaults to having extramarital affairs.

“The embarrassing episodes are described in previously undisclosed files of military investigations into personal misconduct by U.S. generals and admirals,” the newspaper’s Craig Whitlock wrote. “Along with about two dozen other cases obtained by The Washington Post under the Freedom of Information Act, the investigations add to a litany of revelations about misbehaving brass that have dogged the Pentagon over the past 15 months and tarnished the reputation of U.S. military leadership.”

He added that of the 30 “partially redacted reports” received from the military, “a large majority concerned generals in the Army and Air Force.”

The Defense Department tried to address the problem two years ago, when then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta ordered a review of ethical standards for senior military officers. That effort apparently wasn’t enough, because “even more cases” surfaced following Panetta’s edict, according to Whitlock.

In December, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel issued his own directive for an ethics review, which is supposed to teach “core values and ethical leadership” to officers.[...]

  10. --The rich are even richer: ECB economist unveils new global inequality figures--

    Published time: July 15, 2014

The top 1 percent of Americans and Europeans own a much bigger slice of national wealth than is reported according to a senior economist at European Central Bank (ECB). A lot of wealthy people prefer to underreport their assets when asked in surveys.

“Our knowledge of the wealth distribution is less than perfect,” Philip Vermeulen, a senior economist at the ECB wrote. “The results clearly indicate that survey wealth estimates are very likely to underestimate wealth at the top.”

According to him the top 1 percent of American citizens may hold up to 37 percent of the nation’s wealth. That’s higher than the 34 percent suggested by the 2010 US Survey of Consumer Finance Data from the Federal Reserve.

Germany’s top slice of society holds 33 percent of the country's riches compared with the 24 percent survey data previously indicated. While the richest Italians also hold a higher 20 percent of national wealth than the 14 percent earlier suggested.

The author insists that combining normal surveys with wealth reports would provide a far clearer picture. He refers to a so-called ‘tail wealth’, which is underreporting of assets of participating households.

“Richer households have lower response rates than poorer households,” Vermeulen claims. “Differential non-response can often not be remedied by adjustment of survey weights, as wealth of the non-responding households remains unobserved.”

Vermeulen used the data from Forbes billionaires’ lists as well as the Survey of Consumer Finances by the US Federal Reserve and Europe's Household Finance and Consumption Survey in order to create his report.
