CUPID,The Drone That Will Shoot You With an 80,000 Volt Taser

RT 2014-03-09 / ElectronicProducts.com
A Texas film has revealed an app controlled security drone that can zap intruders with an 80,000 volt taser dart. But Human operators still have to sanction any attack – for now.

Web firm, Chaotic Moon studios, has created a drone that uses a taser instead of missiles, in what could be a policeman’s new best friend in the battle against crime.

It’s called CUPID, but unlike its name, it could turn out as quite a deadly piece of kit. The name stands for Chaotic Unmanned Personal Intercept Drone and can fire a dart packed with 80,000 volts at any unwanted intruder or criminal on the run.

- In a video released on Saturday, CUPID fires the dart at an intern who is brought instantly to the ground.
Medical staff then rushes to assistance before the video cuts out.

Cupid was revealed at the SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin Texas as a concept for how security might be implemented in the future.

“The drone can be deployed when an alarm is triggered. It can find a subject and send live video to the owners phone and ask if you want to authorize the subject or detain them. If you detain them, it drops into fully autonomous mode to detain them until police arrive. If need be stunning them with 80,000 volts of electricity to render them incapacitated,” the firm said in a statement.

The firm said it hopes the drone will “shock the world”, although it wasn’t clear whether they were being ironic.

They also plan to bring out a pepper spray version in the near future.

Chaotic Moon is also developing an EMP drone to knock spying paparazzi drones out of the sky. The EMP drone would fly to within about 2 meters of the intruding drone and blast its electronics with an electromagnetic pulse that would mess up the offending drones electronics and knock it out of the sky.

Chaotic Moon built CUPID to raise awareness of technology that's outpacing everything from regulatory agencies to social norms. We have no plans to develop drone type or commercialize this in any way.

  1. --You Know Who Else Collected Metadata? The Stasi--

Mars 10 2014 by Julia Angwin - Information Liberation

The East German secret police, known as the Stasi, were an infamously intrusive secret police force. They amassed dossiers on about one quarter of the population of the country during the Communist regime.

But their spycraft — while incredibly invasive — was also technologically primitive by today's standards. While researching my book Dragnet Nation, I obtained the above hand drawn social network graph and other files from the Stasi Archive in Berlin, where German citizens can see files kept about them and media can access some files, with the names of the people who were monitored removed.[...]
