  1. -US secretly sends Hellfire missiles, drones to Iraq-

    December 26, 2013

In an attempt to beat back gains by Al-Qaeda-linked insurgents, the United States is moving “dozens” of Hellfire missiles and surveillance drones into Iraq.

According to a report by The New York Times, the decision comes after Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki requested help from US President Barack Obama during a meeting in Washington last month.

The situation in Iraq has become a serious concern over the last year, as insurgents from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria - Al-Qaeda’s regional affiliate - spread through western and northern parts of the country, as well as nearby Syria. More than 8,000 Iraqis have been killed in 2013. That figure includes three bombings that killed nearly 40 people on Christmas Day.

Despite the movement of missiles – 75 Hellfire missiles are being sent to Iraq alongside 10 ScanEagle surveillance drones – some experts believe the US response to be insufficient without the deployment of more powerful military weapons, such as armed drones. While Iraq’s foreign minister has suggested an American-run drone operation as a possibility, Maliki - who is likely running for a third term as prime minster - has yet to make such a request.

“We have not received a formal request for US-operated armed drones operating over Iraq, nor are we planning to divert armed I.S.R. over Iraq,” Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, told The New York Times.

According to Michael Knights of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the reconnaissance drones aren’t likely to turn the tide against the insurgents, considering their small range.

“The real requirement today is for a long-range, high-endurance armed drone capability,” Knights said. “There is one place in the world where Al-Qaeda can run a major affiliate without fear of a US drone or air attack, and that is in Iraq and Syria.” [...]

  2. -UN condemns Christmas Eve demolitions of Palestinian homes by Israel-

    December 26

The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees has condemned Israel's demolition of Palestinian Bedouin dwellings in the West Bank, calling for an immediate halt.

"UNRWA condemns the latest demolitions in the West Bank, which displaced 68 people, the most recent of which occurred on Christmas Eve," spokesman Chris Gunness said in a statement.

“The demolitions took place in Ein Ayoub near Ramallah and Fasayil al-Wusta near Jericho in the Jordan valley with 61 persons displaced in Ein Ayoub, and seven persons, all refugees, displaced in Fasayil al-Wusta," Gunness said. He added that 32 of those displaced were children, "including a five year old girl who is paralyzed from the waist down."

“In addition, some 750 head of sheep and goats are without shelter at this crucial lambing season,” he said.

Gunness stated that at least 663 Palestinian buildings - including 259 homes - have been demolished, and 1,103 Palestinians have been displaced in the West Bank and East Jerusalem this year.

The spokesman urged Israel to obey international laws and halt demolitions. [...]

  3. -‘Tracked everywhere you go’: Snowden delivers Xmas message on govt spying-

    December 24

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has delivered his ‘Alternative Christmas Message’ via a British TV channel. The whistleblower called for an end to mass spying by governments, stating that a child born today will have "no conception of privacy."

Snowden’s address aired by the UK’s Channel 4 comes as an alternative to the Queen’s traditional Christmas speech, which is shown by the country’s other leading broadcasters.

    http://www.channel4.com/programmes/alternative-christmas-message/4od

Filmed in Russia, the address is the first TV appearance of the whistleblower since his arrival in the country, where he was granted temporary asylum in August.

The message starts with Snowden appealing to each and every family, warning them that the scope of government surveillance has gone to the extent that “a child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all”.

As a former US Central Intelligence Agency employee, US National Security Agency contractor, and the person behind the biggest security leak in US history, Snowden gives his assessment of the classic bogey model of the Orwellian state as “nothing compared” to today's surveillance methods.

“The types of collection in the book – microphones and video cameras, TVs that watch us – are nothing compared to what we have available today. We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go. Think about what this means for the privacy of the average person,” the former NSA contractor says.

He goes on to say that “a child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They'll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves, an unrecorded, unanalyzed thought.”

“And that's a problem because privacy matters, privacy is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be,” Snowden adds. [...]

  4. -NSA can easily find individuals hidden in metadata - study-

    December 26

In defending the NSA's surveillance policies, many have cited the agency's claim that it merely collects phone numbers dialed, lengths of calls, and other metadata. Yet researchers now say the NSA can identify individuals in that vast collection of data.

Scholars at Stanford University in California set out to determine how, if at all, the NSA's metadata collection impacts the individual Americans whose information is swept up. The indiscriminate collection of phone records is one of the NSA's primary surveillance programs, and one of the first revealed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. US President Obama sat down with Charlie Rose of PBS in June to defend the government's position.

“Program number one is called the 2015 program. What that does is it gets data from the service providers – like a Verizon – in bulk,” Obama said. “And basically you have call pairs. You have my telephone number connecting with your telephone number. There are no names, there's no content in that database. All it is, is the number pairs, when those calls took place, how long they took place. So that database is sitting there.”

That might be true, technically. But Stanford researchers Jonathan Mayer and Patrick Mutchler found that the agency does not need to collect names to identify an individual.

The pair built an app - known as MetaPhone - which Android users could volunteer to sign up for, in order to give the researchers access to their metadata. They assumed it would be simple to find users based on their metadata and, as it were, it took just hours. [...]

Men icke.

  8. -NSA: An Orwellian surveillance system gone global-

    December 29, 2013

While British politics and media display a strong reluctance to confront the harsh realities of UK spying, we should be worried about further revelations of a dystopian, Orwellian surveillance system gone global, former MI5 agent Annie Machon told RT.

Thousands of attendees have gathered for the annual four-day Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg, which is dedicated to information technology. The conference offers a generally “critical-creative attitude towards technology and the discussion about the effects of technological advances on society,” according to its website.

Speaking at the Congress Friday, journalist Glenn Greenwald condemned the mainstream media and accused his colleagues of failing to challenge the erroneous remarks routinely made by government officials around the globe. [...]
