The attorney general is considered to be the chief lawyer of the U.S. government. The attorney general serves as a member of the president's cabinet, and is the only cabinet department head who is not given the title secretary.
The current attorney general, Eric Holder,[2] was confirmed to office by the Senate on February 2, 2009, and sworn into office on February 3, 2009.[3]

UN Says Sanctions Have Killed Some 500,000 Iraqi Children

| BAGHDAD - A senior U.N. official said Friday about half a million children under the age of 5 have died in Iraq since the imposition of U.N. sanctions 10 years ago. Anupama Rao Singh, country director for the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF), made the estimate in an interview with Reuters. ``In absolute terms we estimate that perhaps about half a million children under 5 years of age have died, who ordinarily. Sanctions were imposed on Iraq as punishment for its 1990 invasion of Kuwait, although the United Nations has allowed Iraq to sell oil to buy food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies. Rao Singh said the sanctions also have affected the quality of education, with many children forced to leave schools to hustle a living on the streets. ``There has been a drop in enrollment, an increase in drop- outs ... children working, children in the street -- all of which, we believe, is going to affect the quality of human resources that Iraq will have in the future,'' she said. - According to Rao Singh, the sanctions have caused massive impoverishment except for a small proportion of the elite. ``The majority of middle class people in Iraq, for instance, now find themselves having to do all sorts of mean and insecure jobs to survive,'' she said.

Washington seems certain that exerting sanctions on countries is the safest way to achieve their foreign policy goals. In reality economic and political sanctions do little to control the governments they target, hitting ordinary citizens hard instead.
According to the British Medical Journal, as many as a million people died from malnutrition-related causes in North Korea in the 1990s, and the situation hasn’t improved much since then. The reclusive nation’s economy is struggling to survive, and its agriculture has suffered major blows from natural disasters.
Syria, too, has fallen foul of the United States. Trade and economic restrictions on this middle-eastern country are adding to the burden on an economy, already ravaged by a civil war that has lasted for over two years.
“Every day people there have to face not just the danger of being killed by a stray bullet, but also the fear that they won’t be able to put bread on the table: access to staple foods has been curtailed by the trade restrictions, prices have sky-rocketed, and life has turned into a struggle for survival.
Cuba is another country against which Washington has implemented its sanctions. No nukes here, just a six-decade association with communism and as a result, no trade with the US. Many say the country’s economy is floundering.
But again, those affected are the most vulnerable in society, particularly Cuba’s elderly, as the country has a rationing system that gives preferential treatment to women and children.
“Those who have been hit hardest seem to be men and the elderly,” RT’s correspondent says.

Över 100 000 iranier beräknas lida av biverkningarna efter gasattackerna under kriget mot Irak på 80-talet. Många utsattes för senapsgas och behöver medicinsk behandling för lung- och ögonskador.
Men de skärpta sanktionerna mot Iran gör det näst intill omöjligt att få tag i medicinen, säger professor Gunnar Westberg som arbetar inom läkarrörelsen mot kärnvapen.
Stor brist på medicin
– De får en väldigt bra lättnad i sin andning med alldeles vanliga inhalatorer. De som vi använder för astma och kol, säger han.
Gunnar Westberg besökte själv Iran i november förra året och kunde då se hur sjuka människor inte får den vård de behöver för att överleva eller för att slippa bli blinda efter de skador de har av senapsgas.
Sanktionerna mot Iran har införts för att sätta press på landet att ge upp sitt kärnprogram som västvärlden tror ska leda till att landet skaffar sig kärnvapen.
Det finns inga sanktioner mot mediciner, ändå är det en stor brist på nästan all medicin i Iran i dag.
Detta på grund av att ingen bank i väst är villig att föra över pengar från Iran till de företag som säljer medicinen. Gunnar Westberg kan i dagsläget inte se att någon ens är intresserad av att försöka lösa Irans medicinbrist.
– Tvärtom. Det blir snarast värre hela tiden, säger han.
Han menar också att sanktionerna slår hårt mot alla de oskyldiga som utsattes för de kemiska gasattackerna. De blir nu straffade ytterligare en gång.
– De som utövar sanktionerna säger hela tiden att det är riktat mot regeringen, mot militären och inte mot civilbefolkningen. Det känns nog som ett hån för dem som lever i Iran. Det är ju civilbefolkningen som drabbas.
Läkarrörelsen mot kärnvapen i Sverige och Tyskland har nu donerat pengar till inköp av inhalatorer som inom kort kommer att levereras till Iran.
