RT.com has been banned on Reddit’s /r/news section, with moderators accusing it of spamming. Puzzled with absurd allegations, RT views the sanctions as an act of censorship with many redditors expressing the same concern.

The announcement of the ban appeared on Reddit at around 12:30 GMT Thursday, with the forum's leading moderator posting: "RT.com has been banned for spam and vote manipulation." It was soon followed by another message, saying that “brigading the thread, downvoting, and crying aren't going to change it, sorry.”

RT immediately contacted the moderators of the /r/news section, as well as Reddit's press office, to request an explanation. But in more than 24 hours no details that could clarify what may have led to the ban have been provided to RT by Reddit.

Reddit’s press office instead replied that it is not consulted by subreddits about their decisions.

“To clarify, it is the prerogative of each individual subreddit's moderators to allow or ban domains from being submitted to their subreddits,” Victoria Taylor, of Reddit’s press service, said. “As we are not moderators of /r/news, we were not involved or consulted on this decision. You would need to appeal to the moderators of /r/news about their decision and address their concerns individually.”

RT has received no reply yet from Douglas MacArthur, the moderator of Reddit’s /r/news section.
RT’s leading web analyst, Aleksey Naumov, said there were no grounds for the moderator to accuse RT.com of spamming.
“Over the last two years, RT’s traffic has increased four- or five-fold,” Naumov said. “Quite naturally, during this period the number of submissions of our materials to Reddit.com, as well as the number of referrals from Reddit to our website, has increased. It’s not difficult to check that it’s not the same people, but different people, who are submitting our stories to Reddit.”

  1. -Reddit Busted Censoring Alternative Media-

    August 31, 2013

    Source: Washington's Blog

It’s bad enough that the government censors and manipulates social media.

But Reddit, Facebook, Digg, Youtube and other social media sites have long censored content as well.

For example, Facebook pays low-wage foreign workers to delete certain content based upon a censorship list. For example, Facebook deletes accounts created by any Palestinian resistance groups.

Digg was caught censoring stories which were controversial or too critical of the government. See thisand this.

Many accuse Youtube of blatant censorship.

And today, two front-page stories on Reddit show:

    (1) Reddit censors

    and

    (2) Redditors are furious about it

(Reddit is an immensely popular website, especially among young men. 6% of all adults – and 15% of all males aged 18-29 – read Reddit.)

One front-page Reddit story today – with more than 8,000 upvotes at last count- reported:

The Russian news site RT.com has been banned from the popular Reddit forum r/news for spamming and vote manipulation.[...]

  2. -Reddit moderator pushed for RT ban 'simply because it's Kremlin'-

    September 01, 2013

The reason RT.com was banned on Reddit’s /r/news section may not be spam or vote manipulation, as was stated officially, but “simply because it’s Kremlin.” This was revealed by a user from his discussion with one of the subreddit’s moderators.

RT.com was banned from /r/news this Thursday on accusations of “spam and vote manipulation”, with no evidence of the violations being presented by the moderators, who said that this information was only for “internal” use.

The move caused uproar among the reddit users as the drama was then taken to another subforum, /r/worldnews, where several things were eventually revealed.

Redditor BipolarBear0, who is listed as one of the moderators for the /r/news section, said that no “vote manipulation” ever took place, and that forum's leading moderator douglasmacarthur, who was behind the ban, made “an honest” mistake by making such announcement.

When another user asked him to clarify if the ban was explained by “just spam of RT.com links,” the moderator’s answer was: “Yeah.”

Responding to Michael Reed, co-founder of the Restore the Fourth movement, in another thread, BipolarBear0 stressed that he wasn’t involved in the current decision to ban RT.com, but added that he had in general been advocating the move: “Simply because… It’s the Kremlin.”[...]
