More Armed Forces personnel could be called up to provide Olympic security, officials have admitted.
Asked if more troops will be required when the Games begin in two weeks, Lord Coe replied: “We are working on it at the moment.”
Ministers were this week forced to assign an extra 3,500 soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines to security duties at Olympic sites after G4S, the private security firm being paid £284million for guard work, failed to provide enough staff.
Late on Friday night, G4S issued a statement, apologising for the blunders. The company it said it “deeply regrets” not being able to deliver on its contract.
Officials admitted it had “recently encountered significant difficulties in processing applicants in sufficient numbers through the necessary training vetting and accreditation procedures”.[...]

UK authorities are leaving nothing to chance during the Olympics, deploying 17,000 military personnel throughout the capital for the duration of the Games, 11,800 of which are soldiers.

In spite of widespread protests, the government is also installing surface-to-air missiles flanking the Olympic Park in East London.
London residents reacted with uproar, claiming that they were not properly consulted over the defense plans. They appealed for a judicial review, arguing that their human rights had been violated and voicing concerns that the presence of missile installations could turn their homes into potential terrorist attack targets.
“If it's going to affect our children, our own safety, our security, then there's a potential for people who are evil-minded who may sabotage the situation. I’m a father of young children, so I have reservations about having missiles placed here,” said one tenant to ABC Radio.
However, their court appeal was overturned on the basis that the missiles pose no legitimate threat to residents.
The UK government has spent more than 1.5 billion pounds on safety measures at the Games in the country’s biggest peacetime security operation in history.

It’s official: starting Saturday, Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) may use “lethal force” against any unauthorized craft, including passenger jets, caught violating London airspace during the Olympics.
The no-fly zone is the latest in security measures that have been criticized for putting Londoners at further risk from terrorist attacks rather than protecting them.
The RAF warned that rogue aircraft that stray into the no-fly zone above London could be shot down.
"As a last resort, we will have lethal force as an option," said Air Vice-Marshal Stuart Atha, the Olympics’ air security commander, at a briefing at the RAF Northolt base in West London. He added that such a situation would be a “worst case scenario” and the decision would be made at the “highest level of government.”
The new no-fly restrictions came into force at midnight on Friday and encompass the central London area, the Olympic Park in Stratford and a large part of the Southeast.
While commercial flights will not be affected by the measures, light aircraft, gliders and hot air balloons will be expected to adhere to flight regulations until August 15.
Teams of military personnel will be on constant watch for craft that stray into the restricted zone. If any suspicious planes are sighted, Typhoon fighter jets and helicopters will be deployed to escort them out of restricted air space. Any craft that does not respond to warnings by the RAF may be gunned down.

Höghastighetsmissiler som kan skjuta ned flygplan, nästan dubbelt så många soldater i London som i Afghanistan och Storbritanniens största krigsfartyg finns nu placerade i London.
Krig? Nej, upprustning mot eventuella terroristattacker inför OS 2012.
Den största militära operation som landet upplevt i fredstillstånd påbörjas nu i London. Inte sedan andra världskriget har London varit så rustat. Anledningen är OS som ligger två veckor bort i tiden.
16 000 soldater
Missiler som kan skjuta ned flygplan och som har en räckvidd på upp till 12 mil placeras ut i huvudstaden på sex strategiskt placerade ställen. Grönområden spärras av, tak till bostadshus tas i besiktning och på floden Thames ligger Storbritanniens största krigsfartyg HMS Ocean. Flygvapnet är beredd med helikoptrar och stridsflygplan står redo.Det är premiärminister David Cameron som har i uppgift att beordra militären att skjuta ned flyplan som passerar luftrummet ovanför London om man tror att flygplanet är ett "självmordsplan".
3500 extra soldater har kallats in - sammanlagt kommer militären bistå med 17 000 soldater. Det är nästan dubbelt så många som är stationerade i Afghanistan.
3300 ungdomar i träning
Säkerhetsföretaget G4S ska dessutom handhålla 10 000 säkerhetsvakter - 3300 ungdomar går nu en utbildning för att kunna hjälpa till att vakta 150 platser runt om i London.
Företaget har dock fått kritik för att de inte lyckades rekrytera 13 500 personer som de till en början hade kontrakt på. Dessutom har bilder från utbildningen av ungdomarna läckt ut, där man kan se några av dem sitta och sova eller lyssna på musik, i stället för att ta del av säkerhetsutbildningen.
al-Qaida och IRA
Människorna som bor i de hus som militären har intagit taken på har protesterat. De är oroliga för att deras hem blir automatiska måltavlor för eventuella terroristattacker, men ansvarig för säkerheten säger att det inte finns något "trovärdigt hot" , rapporterar Daily mail.
Trots den stora militära upptrappningen säger Försvarsdepartementet, säkerhetsföretag och polisen att det inte finns något reellt hot mot de olympiska spelen, men brittisk underrättelsetjänst menar att man har identifierat tre potentiella terrorhot.
al-Qaida och IRA nämns som möjliga hot, men även rivaliserande grupperingar eller minoriteter i London, som normalt inte ses som något säkerhetshot mot Storbritannien.
