Despotic Saudi Regime Lobbies to Chair UN Human Rights Council
It’s one of the world’s most repressive states – a blight on humanity, a cancer in a part of the world known for despotic regimes.
***
Its human rights record is horrific by any standard. Fundamental rights don’t exist.

State terror is official policy. Democracy is strictly prohibited. Torture and physical abuse are commonplace.

So are public whippings, beheadings and hangings.

Due process and judicial fairness don’t exist. Thousands of political prisoners languish in its gulag under deplorable conditions.

Abuse of power is extreme. So is massive corruption and lack of transparency. Inequality is institutionalized.

Independent media don’t exist. Nor do labor rights.
Islam is the state religion. No other is tolerated. All Saudis are required by law to be Muslims.

Failure to comply is considered apostasy – a capital offense.

Capital punishment is standard practice for non-violent crimes – including adultery, armed robbery, drug smuggling, kidnapping, witchcraft, sorcery, and apostasy.

Absolute monarchal rule tolerates no criticism or opposition.

It’s despotic, lawless and brutal – a police state by any standard.[...]

Saudi regime plans crucifixion of dissident this Thursday
***
Aletho news May 12, 2015
Saudi Arabia has been urged to spare the lives of two juveniles and an aging political activist, after plans emerged to execute at least one of them this Thursday.

Sheikh Nimr Baqir Al Nimr, a 53-year old critic of the Saudi regime, and two juveniles, Ali Mohammed al-Nimr and Dawoud Hussain al-Marhoon, were arrested during a 2012 crackdown on anti-government protests in the Shiite province of Qatif.

- After a trial marred by irregularities, Mr Al Nimr was sentenced to death by crucifixion on charges including ‘insulting the King’ and delivering religious sermons that ‘disrupt national unity’.

This week, it emerged that the authorities plan to execute him on Thursday, despite protests from the UN and Saudi human rights organizations.

The planned execution of Mr Al Nimr has prompted fears for the safety of the two juveniles, who were both 17 when they were arrested and eventually sentenced to death on similar charges. Both teenagers were tortured and denied access to lawyers, and faced trials that failed to meet international standards. All three prisoners, including Mr Al Nimr, have not yet exhausted their legal appeals.

Saudi Arabia has carried out executions at an unprecedented rate since the coming to power of King Salman in 2015. On May 6th 2015, the Kingdom carried out its 79th execution of the year, and it is already close to surpassing its 2014 total of 87 executions. Human rights organization Reprieve has urged the European Union to intervene with Saudi Arabia to prevent the killings.

Commenting, Maya Foa, director of Reprieve’s death penalty team, said: “Saudi Arabia’s wave of executions since the start of this year has provoked widespread disgust. But these killings, if they are allowed to go ahead, will mark a new low.

- The sentencing to death of children and the elderly on blatantly political charges is inexcusable, and smacks of an attempt to silence internal dissent in the Kingdom.”[...]

Saudi Arabia at Human Rights Council:
= 'Pyromaniac as town's fire chief'

Saudi Arabia is said to be lobbying for the place of chairman at the Human Rights Council. That's yet to be officially confirmed, but rights groups are crying foul, saying it would be a cruel joke.

RT 2015-05-08
Human rights groups have condemned Saudi Arabia after the beheading of five foreigners this week. Experts warn 2015 will mark a dramatic increase in public executions, as 80 people have already been killed, compared to 88 in the whole of 2014.

RT 2015-05-17
A Pakistani national sentenced to death for drug smuggling has been decapitated in Saudi Arabia, AFP reports. This brings the number of executions since the start of the year to 84 – almost as much as for the whole of 2014.

Iftikhar Ahmed Mohammed Anayat was found guilty of attempting to bring heroin into the Gulf kingdom in balloons concealed in his stomach.

The man was beheaded in the Red Sea city of Jeddah on Sunday, the agency reported, referencing the Saudi Interior Ministry.

The death penalty was carried out a day after an execution of an Indonesian maid, Karni Bt. Medi Tarsim, who was indicted on murdering her employer's 4-year-old child.

Earlier this week, another Indonesian domestic worker, Siti Zainab, was beheaded, despite claims that the woman was mentally ill.

Since King Salman ascended to the Saudi throne, after the death of his predecessor King Abdullah on January 15, 2015, executions, including those of foreign nationals, in the country have stepped up, raising concern in the international community.

Drug trafficking, rape, murder, apostasy and armed robbery are all punishable by death under the strict Sharia law practiced in Saudi Arabia.

- The Saudi authorities explained that the beheadings are needed to show the country’s commitment to “maintaining security and realizing justice” as well as deter people from criminal acts.

- For this reason, the executions are often carried out in public places.

In January, a video of an execution was leaked online, showing a woman’s head severed from her body in the middle of a road.

The Saudi officials commented on the incident by saying that the only violation during the act was its illegal filming. The man responsible for making the video was arrested and is awaiting trial, they told CNN.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is harshly criticized by human rights watchdogs, with Amnesty International ranking the monarchy among the world’s top three executioners.

87 people were beheaded in the country in 2014, with half of the executions carried out for non-lethal offenses, Amnesty International said.[...]

  1. --Obama Promises U.S. Military will Defend Rich Arab Dictatorships--

    May 18, 2015

    Source: All Gov.

High officials from six Persian Gulf countries got assurances last week from President Barack Obama at a meeting of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) that the United States would respond, perhaps with military force, to an “external threat” to any of the countries.

The six countries represented at the meeting, Saudi Arabia; Kuwait; Bahrain; Qatar; Oman; and the United Arab Emirates, seem to have no problems dealing with what they perceive as internal threats, however. Amnesty International has cataloged human rights abuses in each of those countries:

In Saudi Arabia, “torture of detainees was reportedly common; courts convicted defendants on the basis of torture-tainted “confessions” and sentenced others to flogging.”

In Kuwait, “authorities used a telecommunications law to prosecute and imprison critics who expressed dissent using social media, and curtailed the right to public assembly.”

In Bahrain, “security forces used excessive force to disperse protests, killing at least two people. Opposition activists sentenced after unfair trials in previous years continued to be held, including prisoners of conscience. Torture of detainees continued and a climate of impunity prevailed.”

In Qatar, “migrant workers remained inadequately protected under the law and were exploited and abused. Women faced discrimination and violence. The authorities restricted freedom of expression and courts failed to uphold fair trial standards.”

In Oman, “state authorities continued to restrict freedom of expression, including in the media and online. Freedom of assembly was not permitted. Several government critics were detained and held incommunicado for some weeks.”

In the United Arab Emirates, “the government restricted the rights to freedom of expression and association, and prosecuted critics using provisions of the Penal Code and the 2012 cybercrimes law. Prisoners of conscience continued to be held after unfair trials in which courts accepted evidence allegedly obtained through torture and other violations of their rights.”

  2. -Headhunting: Saudi Arabia hiring 8 new executioners after 2015 beheadings hit 85-

    May 19, 2015

Saudi Arabia, which executes more criminals than any nation except China and Iran, wants to hire eight new executioners. A surge in executions has been witnessed under new King Salman’s rule.

The job description published online on Monday says no special training is required from applicants. The executioners would be required to behead condemned criminals in public as well as carry out amputations on those convicted of lesser offenses, Reuters reported.

The executioners would be considered as ‘religious functionaries’, since they would be serving religious courts and be on the lower end of the civil service pay scale, the ad said.

The recruitment drive comes a day after Saudi Arabia executed the 85th person this year. The number reached in less than five months is compared to an estimated 90 executions over the whole 2014, according to Amnesty International.[...]

  3. Swedish Paper Manufacturing Giant Blacklisted for Child Labor Practices

Stora Enso – a Swedish paper manufacturing giant – has been blacklisted after investigations into its supply chain in Pakistan showed that the company was knowingly using child labor. In March, AP7, a major Swedish pension fund, sold off its $4.1 million stake in Stora.

AP7 is a Swedish government owned pension fund that caters to over three million Swedes and is required to follow strict state-mandated policies to invest only in companies that abide by international treaties that Sweden has signed.

The fund owns shares in some 2,600 companies and has the power to exclude a company for five years for failure to uphold environmental, human rights or labor law.

In the past, Stora has also come under fire for its business practices in China and Uruguay where the company has been involved in land disputes.

These conflicts led to Stora being kicked out of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in 2013.

The flag of PLANET EARTH: Designer creates seven-ring emblem to 'unite countries' - and hopes it will be used if we colonise Mars
A Swedish designer has created a flag that he hopes will be used on future missions into the cosmos
Called The International Flag of Planet Earth, it uses an interlocking design of seven rings
The blue background is meant to denote water, while the flower design suggests we should 'share this planet'
And in a series of concept images he imagines that the flag could be used on a global mission to Mars
