Artists: - Israeli wars fought on cultural fronts too

Publicerades den 14 feb. 2015 PressTV News Videos
The announcement was made in a letter signed by artists from different nationalities and religions.
The signatories said they won’t engage in business-as-usual cultural relations with Israel. They also noted that they wouldn't accept neither professional invitations to Israel, nor funding from any institutions linked to the regime.

The artists have also issued separate statements online, pointing out that since the summer war on Gaza, Palestinians have enjoyed no respite from Israel’s unrelenting attack on their land. The signatories added that Israel’s wars are fought on the cultural front too.

Seven hundred artists have just announced a 'cultural boycott' of Israel

Over 700 artists launch cultural boycott of Israel
***
PressTV 2015-02-14
More than 700 international artists have announced a cultural boycott of Israel over what they call the inhuman actions of Tel Aviv against the Palestinian people.

The artists made the announcement in an open letter published by The Guardian on Friday, decreeing that they would not engage in business-as-usual cultural relations with the Israeli regime.

“- We will accept neither professional invitations to Israel, nor funding, from any institutions linked to” Israel, the letter read, adding, “We won’t play music, accept awards, attend exhibitions, festivals or conferences, run masterclasses or workshops, until Israel respects international law and ends its colonial oppression of the Palestinians.”

The signatories also said that since Tel Aviv’s latest war on the Gaza Strip last summer, “Palestinians have enjoyed no respite from Israel’s unrelenting attack on their land, their livelihood, their right to political existence.”

The letter cited a recent statement by the Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, which said 2014 was “one of the cruelest and deadliest in the history of the occupation” by Tel Aviv.

Furthermore, the signatories said the Israeli regime’s wars against the Palestinian people are fought on the cultural front too, saying the regime’s military “targets Palestinian cultural institutions for attack, and prevents the free movement of cultural workers.”

Some of the artists who signed the pledge also posted messages on the website http://artistsforpalestine.org.uk expressing their anger at Tel Aviv’s aggression against the Palestinian people.

“I am constantly shocked and dismayed at the world’s indifference to the continuing plight of the Palestinian people at the hands of the genocidal” regime in Tel Aviv, said actor Patrick Neville, adding, “I hope this statement shines some light on this gross injustice.”

Another supporter of the boycott, Deborah Fink, wrote, “When governments won’t act, the people have to apply pressure wherever, whenever and however they can.

- I will continue to speak out as an artist and as a Jew.”
***

- During the recent Israel war against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, Israeli warplanes targeted a number of schools and hospitals in defiance of the Geneva conventions that ban such attacks.

- More than 2,100 Palestinians, over 500 of them children, lost their lives during the Israeli offensive.

Resisting bullying & censorship in the UK

***
2015-02-14 - Artists for Palestine
When artists and arts organisations exercise their freedom of choice and say ‘no’ to cooperation with governments with negative human rights records, if that government happens to be Israel, they often find themselves having to defend against smear campaigns, bullying and behind the scenes threats to their funding.

Ungrounded allegations of anti-Semitism are routine, even when Jews are among those wishing to distance themselves from Israel.

When we organized a public meeting to discuss these questions, we heard from people working in architecture, theatre, literature and beyond who experienced pressure either because they were trying to present work that contradicted the Israeli national narrative or because the cultural organization they were involved with attempted to distance itself from official Israeli bodies.

We believe there is an urgent need to trace and expose such patterns of interference and censorship, and to build a reactive network that can mobilize to defend independent arts in the UK from behind the scenes threats and manipulation. We can only do this by working together.[...]

  2. --700 artists declare cultural boycott of Israel to support Palestinians 'trapped in Gaza'--

    RT February 15, 2015

Seven hundred prominent artists have pledged to accept no professional invitations to Israel or funding from institutions linked to the Israeli government "until it complies with international law and universal principles of human rights."

Writers, filmmakers, composers and actors say their cultural boycott is a "non-violent gesture of support for those Palestinians trapped in Gaza."

"I often feel in despair when I think of the suffering of the Palestinian people living and dying under an apartheid state that disregards international law and universal principles of human rights," Alexei Sayle, an English stand-up comedian, author and actor, said.

According to one of the leading British filmmakers, Ken Loach, the cause of the Palestinians is "the great cause of our time."

"Their oppression by the State of Israel breaks international law and the Geneva Convention. The US finances and supports those crimes, along with Britain and the European Union. In those circumstances, civil society must act," he stated. The boycott of cultural projects sponsored by the Israeli State is the least we can do. Many of us think the boycott should be more extensive!"

Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters stated that he is supporting "all those courageous Israelis and Palestinians who are trying to make peace for themselves and for their neighbors."

"Join us on the barricades. The air above the parapet is clean," Waters wrote. [...]

  3. -CIA controls mass media like the NY Times, Time Magazine and much more-

    Posted: 15 Feb 2015

In 1953, Joseph Alsop, then one of America’s leading syndicated columnists, went to the Philippines to cover an election. He did not go because he was asked to do so by his syndicate. He did not go because he was asked to do so by the newspapers that printed his column. He went at the request of the CIA. Alsop is one of more than 400 American journalists who in the past twenty‑five years have secretly carried out assignments for the Central Intelligence Agency, according to documents on file at CIA headquarters. Some of these journalists’ relationships with the Agency were tacit; some were explicit.
