US has reportedly started supplying Syrian rebels with anti-tank weapons

RT 2014-04-07
Rebels embattled against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad have reportedly come into possession of high-powered anti-tank weaponry, the likes of which may have been supplied by the United States.

Images of rebels equipped with heavy arms have begun to circulate in recent days, and at least one news site has claimed that the source responsible is the US government.

On Monday, Israel’s Debkafile website reported that two moderate Syrian rebel militias — the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian Revolutionary Front — have been supplied with advanced US weapons, including armor-piercing, optically-guided BGM-71 TOW missiles, thanks to the Pentagon.

According to Debkafile’s report, US Gen. Martin Dempsey — the chairman of the Joint Chiefs — asked officials in Israel last week to help get Saudi Arabian fighter jets stationed at the kingdom’s Faisal Air Base at Tabuk near Jordan positioned in a manner that would provide air cover as American forces moved the weapons into southern Syria. Debkafile attributed the claims to unnamed military sources.

Late last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that US President Barack Obama and Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah “appeared to narrow their disagreement on assisting Syrian rebels” amidst a meeting between the two. According to the Journal’s report, Obama administration officials said the meeting ended with the White House agreeing to increase its level of assistance to Syrian rebels.

Senior US officials said their goal is to provide assistance to moderate Syrian rebels not just as a ‘counterweight’ to the Assad regime, but also to extremist elements of the opposition,” Carol Lee and Ellen Knickmeyer wrote for the paper.

At the same time, however, the Journal reporters said that the White House made it clear to the Saudis — who reportedly asked for America’s assistance — that Washington was not comfortable supplying certain weapons, including hand-held anti-aircraft missile launchers known as manpads, due to the “proliferation risk” involved with introducing those types of arms into the heart of Syria. The South China Morning Post also cited US officials as saying the Obama administration was considering supplying weapons and has recently “been able to develop deeper relations with the opposition.”[...]

Hillary Clinton Laughs at Supporting Al Qaeda in Syria and Libya

Publicerad den 10 apr 2014 av: WeAreChange
In this video Luke Rudkowski asks Hillary Clinton why she supported Al Qaeda in Libya and Syria. During her tenure as Secretary of State the United States was providing financial and military support to Al Qaeda affiliated groups in Syria & Libya. When WeAreChange asks for an explanation Hillary Clinton laughs as if supporting Al Qaeda is funny.

RT 2014-04-03
Western-backed rebel leader, Jamal Maarouf, has admitted that the fighting against Al-Qaeda was “not our problem” and that his group is battling alongside the terrorist organization.

Maarouf told The Independent that his group, the Syrian Revolutionary Front (SRF), carries out joint operations with Jabhat Al-Nusra – the official Al-Qaeda branch in Syria.

“- It’s clear that I’m not fighting against Al-Qaeda. This is a problem outside of Syria’s border, so it’s not our problem. I don’t have a problem with anyone who fights against the regime inside Syria,” Maarouf said to the media outlet.

The SRF leader even provided examples of the ways his group was helping Al-Qaeda.
“If the people who support us tell us to send weapons to another group, we send them. They asked us a month ago to send weapons to Yabroud so we sent a lot of weapons there. When they ask us to do this, we do it.”

Maarouf’s brigades were previously viewed as moderate among rebel forces that are more and more dominated by radical militants. Plus, the SRF was allegedly receiving significant aid from the US and other Western allies to battle the extremist forces.

However, Maarouf denies getting strong support from the US, saying there was a one-time $250,000 payment for salaries and benefits of a shared operations room in Jordan to fight the Southern Front.
“We have received lots of promises from the US, but so far nothing more,” he stated.
Maarouf’s advisor confirms this, insisting that the SRF relies on funding from Saudi Arabia.

The statement of the rebel leader comes a few days after Russia condemned “the extremist actions” in Syria, following the attack on the Armenian Christian town of Kessab.

“The UN Security Council should discuss the situation in Kessab and give it a principled evaluation,” the ministry said. “We believe that the Syrian government and the opposition should join efforts to eradicate terrorism in Syria.”

Russia’s Foreign Ministry also criticized the UN human Right Council’s resolution on the situation in Syria as one-sided.

A few days earlier, President Obama was pondering sending anti-aircraft weapons to the Syrian rebel forces, AP reported.

Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups are known for their atrocities in Syria. Over 94 Alawite women and children were kidnapped by Sunni rebels from villages in the coastal province of Latakia. A week earlier, 13 Greek Orthodox nuns were freed in exchange for the release of 138 women from government prisons.

The violence in Syria has already killed over 140,000 people, forced millions to flee their homes and triggered a regional humanitarian crisis dubbed the worst in recent decades.

  2. Bashar Assad wins Syria presidential election with 88.7% of vote

    June 04, 2014

Bashar Assad has won a landslide victory in the Syrian presidential poll with 88.7 percent of the vote. This will secure him a third seven-year term in office amidst a bloody civil war, which stemmed from protests against his rule.

"I declare the victory of Dr Bashar Hafez Assad as president of the Syrian Arab Republic with an absolute majority of the votes cast in the election," parliament speaker Mohammad Laham said in a televised address from his office in the Syrian parliament.

A total of 10.2 million people voted for Assad. The voter turnout stood at 73.42 percent. No violations have been reported, Syria’s Higher Judicial Committee for Elections said as quoted by SANA news agency.

Syrian officials said the result was a vindication of Assad’s three-year campaign against those fighting to get rid of him.

This was the first multi-candidate presidential election in Syria for almost 50 years. The other two candidates for the top post were Hassan Abdullah Nouri, from the National Initiative for Administration and Change in Syria, and Maher Abd Al-Hafiz Hajjar, formerly from the People's Will Party.

Despite the high turnout figures, residents of some areas in the country’s north and east were obstructed from voting by rebel forces.

The conflict in Syria has already killed 160,000 people and created nearly 3 million refugees, as well as displacing more people inside Syria.

But while opposition groups inside Syria and most countries in the West have denounced the election as a sham, many Syrians are supporting President Assad and see him as the only option to return stability to the country.

“This is our duty, we can’t allow people from outside the country to decide for us. Our duty is to vote – or order to protect our country,” Usam Hammami, a resident in the capital Damascus, told RT’s Maria Finoshina.
