The National Security Agency spied
on the internal communications of the Vatican, along with the ingoing
and outgoing phone calls of the future Pope Francis during the papal
conclave in March, according to Italian magazine Panorama. The NSA
categorized communications from Vatican City with titles such as
"foreign policy objectives" and "threats to the financial system." "We
don't know anything about this, and in any case we don't have any
concerns about it," Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Holy
See press office, said. The NSA denies the assertions from Panorama.
