EU-kommisionen förnekar att de gett order om att censurera Irans TV-kanaler, som tidigare sände över hela Europa. De hävdar att ägarna till media-distributionen inom EU agerat självständigt och själva beslutat om censuren.

Nineteen Iranian state-run TV and radio stations have been taken off air in the EU. The decision by a leading satellite provider comes as European officials imposed new sanctions against Tehran.

They're targeting Iran's banking sector and energy trade and are aimed at making it curb its suspected nuclear weapons program.

Political analyst Chris Bambery says the measure is simply an attack on freedom of speech.

The European Commission has denied it ordered a ban on Iranian state channels, saying that two providers acted independently.

Previously Tehran slammed the EU for completely jamming its 19 TV and radio stations which broadcast across Europe. The ban coincides with a further tightening of sanctions against the country, mostly targeting its financial and trade sectors.

Independent filmmaker and media analyst Danny Schechter thinks the EU simply doesn't want to hear a contrary point of view.
