UK union calls for protest
against police privatization

PressTV 2012-07-04
Britain’s largest trade union Unite has organized a protest rally against the privatization of police services while hitting out at the government for hiding the process.

The rally has been planned for Thursday July 12 outside the West Midlands police Head quarters, Birmingham.

Revelations back in March showed West Midlands and Surrey police have invited bids worth £1.5 billion to major private security firms including G4S on behalf of all forces across England and Wales to carry out a range of police duties including emergency call handling, investigating crimes and detention of suspects.

- The British Home Office had earlier tabled plans to hand out part of the frontline police services to private firms in line with 20-percent cuts in government grants on forces.

The plan emerged in March to have been originally the brainchild of West Midlands chief constable Chris Sims and former Surrey chief constable Mark Rowley.

“West Midlands police is holding a public meeting on Thursday 12 July.

- Plans to privatize core police functions such as 999 call handling, forensics, investigating crimes, patrolling neighborhoods and custody and detention will be top of the agenda,” Unite said on its website.

The Union that called on the public to join the protest and have their say on the subject also condemned the privatization of police services as “a crime”.

“Selling off police services is a crime - not telling you about it is criminal,” it said.
